Bintang raksasa itu terbentuk karena gas helium yang terdapat di bagian intinya meledak.
Itu membuat matahari menggelembung 200 kali lebih besar dari ukurannya yang sekarang dan cahayanya-pun 2.000 kali lebih terang.
Kemudian, untuk masa 150 juta tahun berikutnya, suhu matahari akan turun lagi. Ini dikarenakan helium yang terdapat di bagian intinya sudah habis.
Namun, gas helium yang terdapat di lapisan-lapisan lebih luar akan meledak secara beruntun serta melemparkan bagian-bagian yang hancur itu ke angkasa.
Sehingga, bobot atau massa matahari akan terus berkurang. Satu juta tahun kemudian, matahari terus menyusut ukurannya sampai cahayanya redup dan akhirnya hilang sama sekali.
Pada masa tersebut, manusia mungkin sudah pindah ke planet lain.
